Hawthorn Tennis Club Water Management

Court Surface Review

The Hawthorn Tennis Club land is within an area that is undergoing Boroondara Council review.  This review could result in a number of potential outcomes.  Due to the uncertainty surrounding the outcomes, all decisions on the long term future of the court surface have been deferred.

Water Management - short term

As a short term measure all seven courts have been treated with Magnesium Chloride.  Water savings of over 50% compared to 2007 have been achieved.

Water Management - medium term

The medium term strategy has seen the Club successful in obtaining a Commonwealth Government Community Water Grant to conduct a water harvesting project.  The Grant of $37,000 was used in conjunction just over $20,000 of Club funds.

Support from the Mayor of Boroondara has been provided and the project was completed in mid 2008.

The project involved the installation of water tanks and associated plumbing works to collect rainwater and the purchase of Class A recycled water as required. Implementation is estimated to save approximately 500 kL/yr.

Water is collected from 3 locations:

  • recovered from Courts 1 to 3 via the drain pipes under the courts surface
  • collected from the clubhouse roof.
  • collected from the Hawthorn Library Meeting Room.

The water collected isused for:

  • Connecting to the court sprinkler system (to all courts).
  • Connecting to a separate court hosing system (to all courts).
  • An alternative toilet flushing water supply.

The water is not connected to any drinking water systems or the existing court sprinkler/bubbler system. It is an entirely separate system with a capacity of approx 90,000 Litres
